Comparing like with like
Public schools are compared with public schools, and private schools with private schools. Matching uses 19 measures across five domains, with adjustable weights and a minimum 70% coverage of the target’s active feature weight.
Private-school comparisons also account for religious affiliation. Missing or inapplicable measures are omitted pairwise rather than treated as zero.
Data sources
The current dataset combines NCES Common Core of Data public-school data for 2024–25 and Private School Universe Survey data for 2021–22. These reference periods differ and should be considered when interpreting results.
